Israel declares martial law as death toll tops 700 in ongoing conflict

On October 8, Israel officially declared a state of martial law in response to an unprecedented attack by Hamas, which has left the death toll surpassing 700 with expectations of further increases. Additionally, the fate of over a hundred individuals who were abducted and taken to the Gaza Strip remains uncertain, according to reports from the Times of Israel.

In response to these developments, Israeli fighter jets carried out a series of "intense" airstrikes on Gaza targets on Sunday afternoon. This military escalation follows the decision made by the Israeli security cabinet, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, on Saturday night to formally declare a state of war, granting the authority to undertake "significant military actions."

Concurrently, the Palestinian WAFA agency, citing the Palestinian Ministry of Health, reported 413 Palestinian casualties. Among the deceased are 78 children and 41 women who lost their lives due to Israeli airstrikes, resulting from the bombardment of various residential areas across the Gaza Strip.
