State Department confirms report on US, EU, Russia diplomats’ meeting days before Azerbaijan attack on Karabakh
The US Department of State, in response to the inquiry by the Voice of America Armenian Service, confirmed the report published in the press that senior diplomats from the US, the European Union (EU), and Russia had met in Turkey a few days ago before Azerbaijan's military attack on Nagorno-Karabakh in September.
In its response, the US State Department noted that the meeting held in Istanbul on September 17 was aimed at solving the urgent humanitarian needs in Nagorno-Karabakh, the United States remains deeply engaged in the situation, and is committed to helping the parties achieve lasting peace in the South Caucasus.
Citing an anonymous senior diplomat and officials, the Politico newspaper had reported that diplomatic representatives of the EU, the US, and Russia had held secret talks in Istanbul on September 17, two days before the new escalation over Nagorno-Karabakh.
Earlier, the Russian side also confirmed the report about this meeting.
