New bill seeks to ban Armenian soldiers from using smartphones, joining protests

A new bill drafted by Armenia’s Defense Ministry forbids military personnel from using smartphones while on duty.

The amendments to the law on the military service and the status of servicemen also call for a ban on servicemen’s participation in protest rallies or other acts of civil disobedience.

Deputy Defense Minister Arman Sargsyan introduced the bill at a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Defense and Security on Monday.

He says the new legislation sets an exception for the use of smartphones in cases defined by the head of the competent state body.

Under the bill, servicemen would also be banned from making public calls or statements on military service or political affairs, as well as posting any military content, including photos and videos, on social media.
