Georgian PM, EUMM Head discuss situation in Russian-occupied regions
The “severe” situation in security environment, humanitarian and human rights in the Russian-occupied regions of Georgia and along the occupation line were discussed on Friday in a meeting between the Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Dimitrios Karabalis, the new Head of the European Union Monitoring mission in Georgia.
The meeting noted the role of the mission as the only international mechanism present on the ground in Georgia for ensuring regional security and peace, the Government Administration said.
Garibashvili reaffirmed the commitment of his Government to the policy of peaceful resolution of the conflicts on the territory of the country, while the officials also reviewed security environment and challenges in the wider region and the world.
The EUMM last year marked the 14th anniversary of its operation in Georgia, with the mission’s current activities based on observing developments along the line separating the Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) from the rest of the country.
Its activities are based on four lines of operation with regard to the occupation - stabilisation, normalisation, confidence-building and informing the European Union policy.
