UN Security Council calls for unblocking of Lachin corridor
At the request of the Republic of Armenia, the UN Security Council has been discussing the situation in the Lachin corridor since 24:00 today.
France calls for the immediate and unconditional unblocking of the Lachin corridor. The U.S. representative to the UN called the blocking of transport communication between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh unacceptable and called for the immediate resumption of traffic, including humanitarian goods, through the Lachin corridor.
Russia expects that the movement of vehicles through the Lachin corridor will be fully restored in the near future, the Russian representative said. She noted that Russia is taking all necessary measures to resolve the situation around the Lachin corridor as soon as possible.
Great Britain also called for the immediate opening of the Lachin corridor. The British representative to the UN noted that the closure of the corridor for more than a week now could have dire humanitarian consequences, especially in winter.
According to the Brazilian representative, any obstruction of the Lachin corridor endangers the people of Nagorno-Karabakh and threatens the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Calls to unblock the Lachin corridor were also made by representatives of Kenya, Mexico, Norway, Ireland and India.
The UAE is concerned about the recent rise in tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The UAE representative to the UN stated his country's principled position that there can be no military solution to the conflict, urging the sides to resolve their differences through peaceful diplomatic means.
