Armenian and Azerbaijani FMs meeting with U.S. Secretary of State ends in New York

Armenian and Azerbaijani foreign ministers and U.S. Secretary of State ended their meeting in New York. During the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov met on Monday  with American Secretary of State Antony Blicken as mediators, the Armenian MFA press service informed NEWS.am.

During the meeting, Ararat Mirzoyan stressed that the armed forces of Azerbaijan must be withdrawn from the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia, the use or threat of force is unacceptable, and international mechanisms must be employed to prevent further escalation. He stressed the importance of rapid resolution of humanitarian issues, including the return of prisoners of war.

Mirzoyan reaffirmed the readiness of the Armenian side to participate in the comprehensive settlement of relations.

Opening the meeting, Blinken said that during conversations with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, the two leaders said they were ready for peace. "Strong, sustained diplomatic engagement is the best path for all, there is no military solution to the crisis between Armenia and Azerbaijan, instead there is a diplomatic path that leads to peace and resolves differences.  The United States will do everything possible to support these efforts," he assured.

The meeting between the Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan and Blinken was initiated by Washington on the sidelines of the UNGA in New York following Azerbaijan's large-scale attack on Armenian territory. The Armenian side claimed 207 dead and missing, while the Azerbaijani side claimed 79 dead.

Mirzoyan and Bayramov last met on July 16 in Tbilisi. A trilateral meeting of foreign ministers with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Dushanbe was held in May.
