U.S. and UK discuss peace and reconciliation efforts in the South Caucasus
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman on Monday met with UK Minister of State for Europe and North America James Cleverly in Washington.
The two sides discussed "bilateral cooperation to support South Caucasus peace and reconciliation efforts," the State Department said in a readout without specifying further details, TURAN"s U.S, correspondent reports.
The move comes at the time when Azerbaijani and Armenian Foreign Ministers held their first direct phone call, something that Washington has been urging for a while now.
Prior to his trip to Washington, James Cleverly spoke with Azerbaijani foreign minister, according to media reports. Similar call was also made to Yerevan last month.
During their meeting at the State Department, Sherman and Cleverly also discussed "continued close U.S.-UK coordination to hold the Kremlin accountable for its brutal atrocities in Putin’s unprovoked and unjustified war against Ukraine," according to the DoS readout.
