Armenian opposition to boycott presidential election

The opposition Hayastan (Armenia) and Pativ Unem (I Have Honor) alliances in the Armenian National Assembly will not nominate candidates for the post of president.

"We have discussed the advisability of nominating a candidate, but in the current situation we consider it unacceptable and wrong to participate in the legitimization of this  election, even indirectly. Based on this, the Hayastan and Pativ Unem factions of the National Assembly have decided not to participate in the presidential election in any way," the statement posted on the Facebook page of the Hayasatn alliance reads.

The position has become vacant after Armen Sarkissian resigned on January 23.

On February 1, the ruling Civil Contract party of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan officially nominated non-partisan Vahagn Khachatryan, currently a minister of high-tech industry, for the post of president. On March 3, Pashinyan announced that the presidential election will be held in early March of this year.
